Run Disney

I am sure most people don’t equate Disney World or Disneyland with running (other than to get in line to meet Anna & Elsa), but both locations host several races every year, from 5K’s to full marathons. These events draw experienced runners, new runners & families to the parks to get some great exercise & earn a shiny new medal. It is also a great excuse for a Disney vacation!

The fun starts in January at Disney World with the marathon weekend. There are races for the kids, a 5K, 10K, half marathon & full marathon. Feeling Goofy? Run the half & full marathons for an extra medal or get Dopey & run all four races for six fantastic medals. Talk about burning off those Dole Whips!

In addition to the marathon weekend at Walt Disney World, there is the Princess Half in February, the 5K Expedition Everest Challenge in May, the Tower of Terror 10 Miler in October & the Wine & Dine Half Marathon in November. Almost all of these race weekends include options for the kids & a 5K.

Disneyland Star Wars Run

Disneyland offers a brand new Star Wars themed race in January, the Tinkerbell Half Marathon in May, the Disneyland Half in September & the Avengers Half in November. If you do one race at Disneyland & one at Disney World within a calendar year, you will receive a special Coast to Coast medal.

Starting in 2015, you can also do the Castaway Cay Challenge-a 5K on Disney’s private island as part of a Disney Cruise. Just do a race during marathon weekend or the Princess Half weekend.

I love how Disney encourages people to run & have fun. Jeff Galloway, the Olympic medalist, offers free training plans on the run Disney website for new runners to those who want to improve their time. The packet pick up/expo features vendors that sell sparkly running skirts, character themed shirts and even specially designed Disney running shoes.

The best part about the Disney races (besides the awesome bling) is that you are running at the happiest places on earth. There aren’t many other races where you get to meet your favorite characters or run through castles. Grab a costume & head out for one of these great races! The races sell out fast so be sure to sign up as soon as they are announced.
